Hundreds of Laughs. Dozens of Scenes. One Word Suggestions.

The Pittsburgh Improv Jam is a night of spontaneous, comedic scenes inspired by audience suggestions and performed by experienced improvisers. Every Improv Jam opens with a quick, high-energy round of speed freeze to loosen everyone up. A featured team of professional improvisers takes the stage next, getting a single word from the audience and promptly blowing everyone's minds for 20 minutes, or however long a good mind-blowing takes that night. Then, like a comedic amoeba, the pros divide and absorb other improvisers on the way to becoming two separate and distinctly-attired Jam teams. Finally, those and other performers are brought to the stage for The Steel City Set!

What isn't the Improv Jam? Well, it isn't a jokey, short-form show like Whose Line Is It, Anyway. Nor is it some awkward, open-mic, stand-up comedy night. And this isn't where you go to yell "poop" or "gynecologist" every time we ask you for a word - that would be college.

So you want to be an improviser? We encourage anyone who would like to perform to first come to watch an Improv Jam, and then talk with us after the show. Buy us a beer. Let us know that you're interested in being on stage, and that you'd be willing to buy us another beer. We'll give you the run-down on how to sign up for a stage turn the next time out.

That's enough talk, computer screen! Let's face it: we can't convince you like this. Seriously: talking about comedy is like trying to describe the color of a dream Crayon, or the effect that a cool breeze has on your income taxes. It's just better to be here for it. So come to the Cabaret on Thursdays, inspire our performers with your suggestions and be a part of the most exciting comedy in the 'Burgh - The Pittsburgh Improv Jam!

Death Boogie is a multimedia Hip Hop Poetry Musical that follows the fictional story of Victor Spartan, a blue collar worker who lives a comatose lifestyle by day and at night, hears the poetic sounds of revolution. Through the combination of music and comic book illustrations, Death Boogie is a high energy whimsical examination on the notion of martyrdom, altruism, and courage through the stories of a Greek Titan, a soldier, a prisoner of war, a cheetah, and a child. Written and performed by Actor and Poet Darian Dauchan, with musical accompaniment by the groundbreaking music group The Mighty Third Rail, and directed by Jennifer McGrath.

Tim Stevens has appeared in numerous clubs and concerts throughout metropolitan Pittsburgh. Nancy Wilson took Tim's song writing ability to a national and world-wide audience when she recorded his "The Sadness In My Eyes" composition on her "Take My Love" album released in March, 1980 on Capitol Records.

Critically acclaimed chef, television host, restaurateur, and author Lidia Bastianich comes to Pittsburgh’s Byham Theater on June 2nd for an hour of cooking, multimedia storytelling, and a live Q & A. Dotted with footage of touching interviews with Lidia, Grandma Erminia, and Tanya, you’ll go behind the scenes in the Bastianich family through the ages!

Lidia talks about growing up in Italy, her family’s struggle to come to America, her introduction to Italian-American food, and her subsequent rediscovery of authentic regional Italian cuisine. Bringing her story back to the US, Lidia’s latest book and public television series, Lidia’s Italy in America, pay homage the people and places that carry on the Italian-American spirit.

The adventure that is adapting to a new life in America is illustrated by Lidia’s own story, examined in her latest book, and celebrated in her live show.

Packed to the gills with gut-busting hilariousness, the show skewers popular conventions about internet-only content, greeting cards, children's programming, and, of course, vampires. This all-singing, all-dancing nude review contains no dancing, no nudes, and very little singing. But if you like abusive puppets, slide shows and disgusting food, well, there might just be a little something for you in this show.

He studied with Tony JanFlone from 1971-1976, followed by a master class with Carlos Barbosa-Lima continuing his music studies at Duquesne University with Robert Clarke. While living in Boston, Mark studied under the late jazz educator, Charlie Banacos. He also studied with Mick Goodrick, the author of THE ADVANCING GUITARIST and other publications. Mark has played in a wide range of musical genres including solo guitar, duos with vocalists, saxophonists, bassists, trio and quartet settings.

In 1996, he released his first CD, SILENT WITNESS/ONEIRA, a recording of original music for acoustic and electric guitar, in a solo, trio, and quartet setting. In 1997, he arranged and played on vocalist Carolyn Thompson's CD, THE FIRST TIME, with bassist Ron Carter and drummer Lewis Nash. He also produced, arranged and played on vocalist Pam Pryor's CD, PRYOR KNOWLEDGE. In 1998, he released a solo CD, UNCOVERED, a recording of jazz and contemporary standards.

When Mark returned to Pittsburgh, he became active on the local scene and has recently been playing with vocalist Patrick Arena in a duo setting; he produced and played on Patrick's 2007 CD, NIGHT AND DAY. In 2008, he released MYTH AND FEELING, a solo guitar CD, to coincide with his performances at the Umbria Jazz Festival in Perugia, Italy.

Manfred Honeck, a superb interpreter of Richard Strauss, conducts three of Strauss’ tone poems: Don Juan, Death and Transfiguration and Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks. Local jazz stand out Dwayne Dolphin is a mainstay in the jazz scene, working with Pittsburgh greats such as Roger Humphries, Pete Henderson and Carl Arter. Throughout his career, Dolphin has had the opportunity to play and record with the “Who’s Who” of music, such as Nancy Wilson, Melba Moore, Fred Wesley and Abby Lincoln, among others. Dwayne Dolphin's vast and diverse experience has afforded him the opportunity to lend his musical expertise in many areas. Learn how to create 10-minute plays. Daily playwriting classes will consist of in-class exercises in dialogue, character development, dramatic action, structure, and theatricality. Acting classes will introduce styles (presentational vs. representational) including farce, period (Shakespeare) and contemporary (August Wilson) as well as Acting for the Camera and Stage Combat. Focus on the individual writer’s process, with emphasis on how to give and take feedback, while developing a common language in order to discuss new play development. Ten minute plays and monologues will be revised and rehearsed for presentation to an audience at the end of the session. All students will have the opportunity to write, act and/or direct if they choose.

Roger Humphries is rated by music critics as one of the most exciting percussionists in the business. He has provided the rhythmic beat for music legends as Ray Charles, Horace Silver, Richard "Groove" Holmes, Stanley Turrentine, James Moody, among many others in his brillant career. Roger has performed at Carnegie Music Hall, the Village Gate and the Apollo Theatre in New York. He has also played at the Bohemian Caverns and Shelly Manne's Manhole in Los Angeles; the Penthouse in Seattle, Wash.; Pep's Lounge and Showboat, Philadelphia; the Jazz Workshop, Boston; Ronny Scott's in London and many other great jazz destinations worldwide. He has played with a who's who of jazz titans, including Dizzy Gillespie, Lee Morgan, Coleman Hawkins, Grant Green, Billy Taylor, Bill Doggett, Benny Green, Richard " Groove" Holmes, Lionel Hampton, , Clark Terry, J.J. Johnson, Billy Preston, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Jack McDuff, Gene Harris, George Harris, George Benson, John Faddis, Slide Hampton, Johnny Griffin, Herbie Mann, Randy Brecker, Joe Williams, Milt Jackson and Jimmy Witherspoon. In Pittsburgh, Roger has performed with Sean Jones, Nathan Davis, Frank Cunimondo, Pete Henderson, Dwayne Dolphin and too many others to mention.

After playing with various groups around the country, in 1972, Roger organized his own band, R H Factor, and in 1996, he assembled Roger Humphries' Big Band.

Guitarist Andy Bianco graduated from the Berklee College of Music with a degree in Performance. He has studied privately and/or in group settings with Joe Lovano, Wayne Krantz, Hal Crook, Tiger Okoshi, Rick Peckham, Thomas Blobner, Nathan Davis, Joe Negri, Jimmy Ponder, Dave Fiuczynski, Mick Goodrick and Bruce Bartlett. He has performed and/or recorded with Bob Moses, Roger Humphries, Greg Humphries, Dwayne Dolphin, David Tronzo, Kenny Blake, Don Aliquo Sr. and Jr., Lou Schrieber, Spider Rondinelli, Luques Curtis, Mauro Pagani, Giacomo Merega, Noah Kaplan, Leo Genovese, Phil Grenadier, Mike Tucker, Jacob Yoffee, Ziv Ravitz, James Williams, James Johnson the III, Nathan Peck and many others. He has traveled to over 20 countries working as a professional performing/recording guitarist in the jazz/rock/fusion/pop/neo-soul/avant-garde genres. Bianco also teaches privately and has been a faculty member at the Berklee College of Music Summer Guitar Sessions.

Participants are immersed in a curriculum developed and designed to provide a rigorous, two week course of study with dynamic teaching artists, many from the August Wilson Center's Dance Ensemble which was recently named "Top 25 To Watch" by Dance Magazine. In addition to technique classes in modern and ballet, the course includes master classes in African dance, hip-hop and acting for dancers. The program is structured to artistically challenge and push each participant, while fostering the greatest level of individual artistic development.

The two week program will conclude with an informal public performance/demonstration, giving the participants the opportunity to showcase their achievements, and to experience performing in a professional theater environment. Audition is required.

Kevin Howard began his musical career as a jazz keyboardist over twenty years ago. He is mainly self-taught but gives credit to Pittsburgh’s fine jazz educator, Carl Arter, whom he studied with for over two years. Born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA. Kevin is a solo artist and founder of the award winning contemporary smooth jazz group “ Serious Inquiry”. Most notably, Kevin has shared the stage with well know jazz artists George Benson, Marion Meadows, Najee, Roy Ayers, Lonnie Liston Smith, Norman Conners, Dwayne Dolphin, Kenny Blake, Pieces of a Dream, Roger Humphries, and Joe McBride.
